“ECONOMIC FREEDOM”: 1973–1977

Not long after the 1973 US backed Military coup of the democratically elected Allende government in Chile, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, William Simon visited Chile. During his discussion with General Augusto Pinochet, regarding human rights violations by his government, Simon cheered Pinochet for bringing “economic freedom” to the people of Chile.

For the USA, Economic Freedom, political terrorism and unrestrained free markets, were more important than liberty or democracy.

The World Bank, then headed by Robert McNamara, the brains behind America’s war in Vietnam, that even he found so distasteful he resigned, found no such distaste when he lend the Junta $33million dollars and opened the floor for apologists everywhere to pile in offering loans like confetti, hitting $3.1 billion by 1980.

The best McNamara could summon was to comment on Chile’s “bad international image” — a euphemism for torture, imprisonment, persecution and parachute-less…
